THE AREA OF
APPLICATION
Precision roller bearings are used in robotics wherever compact designs, high rigidity, and precise motion sequences are required. In robot axes and joints, cross-roller bearings absorb radial and axial forces as well as tilting moments. Thin-section bearings reduce installation space and weight. Flex bearings ensure reliable motion in tension shaft drives. In SCARA robots, lift-and-rotate modules enable precise, repeatable assembly and pick-and-place processes.

Typical Applications
Typical applications for rolling bearings in robotics include industrial robots, cobots, SCARA robots, gripping systems, and assembly and pick-and-place systems. In these applications, high radial and axial forces, tilting moments, and dynamic load cycles are concentrated within a limited installation space. This calls for lightweight, rigid, and precise bearing solutions with high running accuracy and reliable repeatability—even at high cycle rates and during extended operating times.
The
Benefits
Crossed-roller, thin-section, and flex bearings enable compact, lightweight, and yet rigid designs. However, it is crucial that the bearing type, preload, clearance, lubrication, and mounting configuration are precisely tailored to the application. This is where SBN brings its special expertise to bear: Our application engineers evaluate loads, rotational speeds, installation space, and precision requirements, and tailor the components specifically to these conditions. In this way, high running accuracy, long service life, and reliable repeatability can be achieved through the design itself.

Our Solutions
KRLF series cross-roller bearings consist of an outer ring, an inner ring, and cylindrical rollers arranged in a cross pattern, separated from one another by plastic
spacers. The inner and outer rings, which are machined from a single piece, are provided with mounting holes, eliminating the need for a mounting flange or housing. This facilitates easy installation and reduces the impact of potential installation errors, thereby ensuring that the KRLF cross-roller bearings deliver
optimal performance. Due to the cross-arranged rolling elements, this bearing design accommodates both high radial and axial forces from both directions, as well as tilting moments. This allows conventional design solutions with two bearing positions to be reduced to a single one.
Furthermore, this compact design is characterized by high rigidity and high running accuracy and is suitable for applications with both inner ring and outer ring rotation. In addition to the bearing designs listed here, SBN offers custom solutions tailored to specific customer requirements.
KRL series cross-roller bearings consist of a one-piece outer ring, a one-piece inner ring, and cylindrical rollers arranged in a cross pattern, separated from one another by plastic spacers. Due to the cross-arranged rolling elements, this bearing design can accommodate high radial and axial forces in both directions, as well as tilting moments. This allows conventional designs with two bearing locations to be reduced to a single one. KRL cross-roller bearings, which are suitable for applications with both inner ring and outer ring rotation, are particularly characterized by their small cross-sections and low weight, enabling the realization of rigid, weight-saving, and space-optimized designs. Three bearing widths are available: 5 mm, 8 mm, and 13 mm. A seal is available for the 8 mm and 13 mm widths. The smallest inner diameter is 10 mm. While maintaining the same cross-section, different bore diameters are also available upon customer request. The bearings are available in the tolerance classes PN, P6, P5, and P4.
Also available with a split outer ring in the KRLC version.
Flex bearings are ball bearings with thin, deformable rings that have been specially developed for shaft-driven gear units. They are mounted on the elliptical shaft generator and conform to its shape. During operation, the outer ring in particular is continuously bent. For this reason, the bearing geometry, material, and bearing clearance must be precisely tailored to the application.
SBN-Flex bearings feature low shoulder heights, a plastic snap-fit cage, and a radial clearance adapted to the elliptical shaft. The dimensions of the inner and outer rings can be customized to meet specific customer requirements.
Precision thin-section bearings in the 617, 618, and 619 series are characterized by their small cross-sections and low weight. This makes them particularly suitable for compact and weight-optimized designs in robot axes, drive units, and other automation applications.
High-precision raceways and precision balls made of high-quality rolling-element bearing steel ensure optimized friction and noise characteristics. In addition to the standard tolerance class PN/P0, higher accuracy classes as well as various clearance, sealing, and lubrication options are available. Upon request, SBN also offers stainless steel versions, coatings, ceramic balls, and custom dimensions.
DRZ series inch-sized thin-section bearings combine a small cross-section with low weight, thereby enabling compact, weight-optimized designs. SBN offers three designs: C‑type radial deep-groove ball bearings accommodate radial and axial forces in both directions. Angular contact ball bearings in the A series support radial and axial loads in one direction and are also available in pairs in O, X, or tandem arrangements. Four-point contact bearings in the X series support high axial forces in both directions, tilting moments, and low radial loads.
Depending on the application, various tolerance classes, stainless steel versions, ceramic balls, seals, cage materials, and lubricants are available. High-precision raceways help ensure optimized friction, noise, and running characteristics.
The linear-rotary module combines linear motion and rotary motion on a single shaft. By rotating or stopping the respective nut, three types of motion are possible: linear, rotary, and helical. The compact design reduces the required installation space and weight while enabling quiet, smooth, and precise motion sequences.
The module consists of a ball screw with threads and longitudinal grooves, as well as two different nuts for linear motion and rotation. It is particularly well-suited for SCARA robots and for fast, repeatable assembly, joining, and pick-and-place applications.
